The Center for Nuclear Security Support organized a National Stakeholders Meeting for the U.S. Department of State\u2019s \u201cPhoenix\u201d Project.<\/strong><\/p>

The Center for Nuclear Security Support at UNWE is a partner in the U.S. Department of State\u2019s \u201cPhoenix\u201d Project on Small Modular Reactors. The project is coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Center.<\/p>

The first event of the project, \u201cEngaging Stakeholders on the Role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Decarbonization Strategies,\u201d was held on December 4\u20135, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Sofia Hotel.<\/p>

The event was officially opened by the Rector of UNWE, Prof. Dr. Dimitar Dimitrov, and the Deputy Minister of Energy, Georgi Samandov, who emphasized the importance of the academic community in advancing innovation and sustainable technologies in nuclear energy. Welcoming remarks were also delivered by Valentin Nikolov, CEO of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH); Aaron Cope, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States; and Michael Wautlet, representative of the U.S. Department of State.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The program included thematic discussions and panels, including \u201cOverview of Small Modular Reactors and Opportunities for Their Adaptation,\u201d where Assoc. Prof. Svetoslav Spasov highlighted the importance of regulatory and technical aspects for SMR safety and security. He also emphasized the need for transparency and effective stakeholder engagement.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
