Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spasov, Director of the Center for Nuclear Security Support at UNWE, and PhD student Georgi Tasev, a team member, participated in the IAEA Legislative Support Mission, which took place at the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) from May 13–15, 2025.
The event was organized by the IAEA and hosted by the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria through the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency. The mission focused on strengthening the national legal framework related to nuclear safety and security, the regulation of Small Modular Reactors, and public support for investments in nuclear energy, as part of Bulgaria’s commitment to international standards and best practices.
As part of the program, issues related to harmonizing national legislation with international requirements were discussed, as well as the challenges associated with the future regulation of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences with international experts and representatives of key institutions, and to engage in practical case studies and discussions on current legal and regulatory topics.
The participation of the Center for Nuclear Security Support at UNWE in this mission is part of the University’s strategic commitment to actively engage in legislative development processes, international cooperation, and capacity building in the field of nuclear energy.
